| What is Web Coding? |
Web coding is difficult to explain to non-coders because when it works properly, it is invisible. Web coding is the vehicle that permits the Web user to see Web page content and design; but the code is not the content nor the design.
Well coded Web pages are easier to maintain (less expensive to maintain because they take less time to do). This means that the more updates a site is likely to need, the greater the advantage is to having quality Web coding.
Web coding controls functionality:
- Are all the images present?
- Do the Web pages look good in all browsers?
- Do the Web pages fit well on different monitor resolutions?
- Will search engines index the pages correctly?
- How long do the pages take to download?
- Is the navigation easy to find and is it sensible for the site?
- Does the navigation match the directory structure?
I also do some design:
I create layouts and especially like to design navigation in conjunction with site architecture. However, I usually just make pages look the way the site owner and/or designer wants them to look.
It is difficult to explain good and bad coding without links to sites to demonstrate my point.
Fortunately, a couple of the sites that I coded were kind enough to permit me to keep their "before" pages on the Web so that I could display the differences that good Web coding can make.
When you look at these pages, you'll notice that I also cleaned up the design. Some of what I do does improve the design because stylesheets and standards create design uniformity between pages; and the better coded a page is, the more complex the functionality can become without "breaking" the pages or sacrificing speed.
